Designing the Invisible Layer That Shapes Emotion

Lighting isn’t just illumination- it’s atmosphere, interaction, and mood.

At 8th Wonder, we design immersive features that connect space and feeling - integrating light, motion, and media from the earliest design stages.

When lighting and digital installations are bolted on late, they clash with the built form or fail to deliver impact.

But when designed holistically, they shape experience.

Why does it matter?

  • Shape emotion and behaviour through immersive design
  • Strengthen identity, memory, and narrative across space
  • Orchestrate movement with light, rhythm, and spatial cues
  • Adapt seamlessly between moments of energy and calm

This allows developers to maximise use - from day to night, across all modes of use.

Around the world:

  • Illuminated River, London transforms 9 bridges into a unified light art experience, reframing the Thames at night.
  • At Al Wasl Dome, Dubai, 360º immersive projection becomes the soul of the precinct.
  • At Lumiere Festival, entire city streets become temporary art – activating public spaces with light and story.
  • Lighting isn’t just a utility. It’s connective tissue. And when integrated early, it elevates every layer of the environment.
  • Playmodes, Gradients is a site-specific visual work for the facade of Donostia’s Kursaal, conceived through creative code, and generative algorithms. Commissioned by Tabakalera, it was created by Playmodes and curated by Irma Vilà.
  • The Felix Hotel in Mascot, Sydney, was an 8th Wonder collaboration including - Fox Johnston Architects and Space Control Design. Fox Johnston led the architectural design, while Space Control, led by Cressida Kennedy, focused on the interior design and styling. They aimed to create a unique airport hotel experience, drawing inspiration from the "golden era of air travel" in the 1960s.

Lighting isn’t just a utility. It’s connective tissue. And when integrated early, it elevates every layer of the environment.
