Choreographing movement.

Flow and Pause is a light-based public artwork that transforms the rhythms of urban life into a mesmerising choreography of light. Inspired by the movement of people and the tempo of train timetables, the artwork reflects the brisk flows, bursts of activity, and moments of pause that define a bustling city station.

Standing seven meters tall, it occupies the core of a spiral staircase connecting Museum Station to the One30 Hyde residential development in Sydney’s CBD. This dynamic installation serves as both a functional and artistic centerpiece, immersing viewers in a visual representation of the city’s energy and rhythm.

Brendan Van Hek

Born in 1968 on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar Country (Perth) and based in Sydney on Gadigal Country, Brendan Van Hek is an interdisciplinary artist known for his works ranging from neon text pieces to large-scale installations. Exploring diverse materials such as glass, mirror, and metal, Van Hek often subverts their expected qualities. His recent focus on pattern reflects his ongoing interest in cultural and social erasure, challenging notions of control and order.

Our studio managed Flow and Pause from concept to implementation, developing detailed construction documentation and engineering solutions to bring the artwork to life. In collaboration with specialist lighting designers, we created a custom double-sided LED system to achieve its dynamic illumination. Throughout installation, we maintained a particle-free environment in the glass chamber, ensuring the pristine presentation and integrity of the work.
