Weerong Arcade – Jonathan Jones – Public Art

Loftus Lane is a key feature of the Quay Quarter Sydney precinct, a transformative rejuvenation of Circular Quay as Sydney’s gateway. At its heart is a compelling public art installation by Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones, renowned for his evocative light-based works that explore cultural connection and exchange.
The artwork, located at the entrance to Loftus Street arcade, features thousands of custom chevron perforations illuminated by integrated LEDs. Programmed to create subtle sequential lighting shifts, the installation draws the public into the space, complemented by soundscapes that enhance the immersive experience.
This dynamic interaction of light, sound, and cultural narrative transforms the laneway into a journey of connection and reflection.
Jonathan Jones, a Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi artist, is renowned for his evocative site-specific installations that bridge cultures and celebrate shared spaces.
His minimal yet poetic light works often utilise repeated forms and everyday materials, expressing ideas of connection, exchange, and positive contact.
By illuminating the laneway with dynamic light and sound, Jones’ work for Loftus Lane creates an enriching dialogue between heritage, contemporary design, and Indigenous culture, leaving a lasting impression on all who pass through.

Our studio managed the design and fabrication of the entire ceiling feature, ensuring seamless integration into the laneway. During installation, we oversaw precise placement to align with the ceiling and walls, integrating speakers into the brickwork, creating a dynamic entry feature for the precinct.
