A landmark of sustainable design.

Burwood Brickworks stands as the world’s most sustainable shopping centre and the first retail development globally to achieve “Living Building Challenge” Certification—the highest standard of sustainability in the built environment. This groundbreaking project sets a new benchmark for environmentally conscious design, blending innovation with functionality.

8th Wonder collaborated with Frasers Property and Hacer Group to deliver key elements across the site. These included 1,700sqm of original Aboriginal ceiling artworks, two bespoke rooftop canopy features, and comprehensive retail and precinct signage. Each element was designed to align with the project’s sustainability goals while enhancing the centre's vibrant and innovative character.

The architectural ribbons on the north and south elevations of Burwood Brickworks span over 100 meters, weaving through the precast façade with more than 100 bespoke aluminium panels. Designed by NH Architecture, our studio refined, fabricated, and implemented these striking features.

Using 3D modelling we resolved materials, structures, and mounting points to ensure precision throughout. A survey of critical connection points guaranteed alignment of the steel support structure and extension arms.

Additionally, we delivered over 190 fabricated canopy panels to clad the existing structure, achieving seamless integration and visual impact.

We delivered all feature and wayfinding signage working in collaboration with the Wayfinding design firm, Strategic Spaces. The 10-metre-high pylons combine custom perforated panels with an internal steel framework, allowing the signs to glow and highlight the Burwood Brickworks brand and tenant logos. Day/night Perspex letters create dark graphics during the day and white at night, while the mesh background transforms to make the logos appear floating when illuminated, creating a striking evening effect.

The Aboriginal ceiling artwork “super graphic” spans 9 sections of sawtooth ceiling in the retail mall area totalling 1700sqm. Each individual section of the graphic has been created to align to the overall vision for the artwork and is compliant with the Living Building Challenge guidelines. Artwork commissioned by Balarinji Artwork, created by Mandy Nicholson.
